Work

I am still running my business Swift Analytics which keeps me exceptionally busy. I have recently hired my eldest daughter part time to take on some of the admin work. She is currently at University in Liverpool and is coming to terms with the transition to working life! I have registered a team subscription at Code Academy to support her development.

I am currently working on a project using Azure Databricks and dbt, I am installing dedicated development lifecycles and enhancing development lifecycle.

I’m also doing research on using Dagster for orchestration, building out a data project around the Fantasy Premier League data from their api.

Community

I am in the process of planning the next edition of Retro Data with Andy Cutler. We recently talked about why we started Retro Data on the inaugaral episode of Beyond The Data Mind hosted by Kay Sauter and Deepthi Goguri.

The Fabric and Power BI Wales User Group will meet again later this month, welcoming Rob Sewell and Mou Rakshit who will be presenting talks on fabric-toolbox and OneLake security.

Interests

I went on a kayaking orientation session recently with my youngest at Cosmeston Lakes, we are joining the local Canoe Club to spend more time on the water.

I am intent on picking up the Piano again this year, I used to play as a child, and even got to the level where I was teaching but somewhere along the way I lost track of it. I have this annoying trait of struggling to pick things up because if I’m unable to do them well I struggle to continue. I have also started running again after 18 months out due to issues with my achilles and then a loss of motivation. Slow steps.

Each of these things needs me to apply concepts I have learnt from Atomic Habits.

This Blog

After discovering Simon Späti’s blog recently and learning of how he has rolled his Second Brain it encouraged me to try something similar. Simon has written about using Obsidian to author his blog, which is something I have been really wanting to achieve since my writing has been disjointed between having blog posts on a Hugo site. The first launch of that is live including a fancy graph. More to come as I begin to release content from my Second Brain.
